A Chick Small Purse
Hooks & Needles
Knitting level: Beginner

Please note that the yarn color shown in the instructional photos may vary from the color included in your box.

Materials:

  • Half a skein of Harvest Moon
  • US size 9 (5.5mm) circular needles
  • Sewing needle
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Button

Stitches uses / abbreviations:

  • K – knit
  • P – purl
  • Cast off
  • Cast on

Casting on the Stitches

First, we need to cast the stitches on the knitting needle to start knitting. There are different ways of casting the stitches; we will teach you various ways in each box. In your first box, we will begin with the simplest way.

Make a slip knot and slip it onto the knitting needle. Do not make it tight; it should not slip from the needle. Wrap the yarn around your finger, take a needle, and insert it into the loose end of the yarn; take the loop off your finger and slide it to the needle.

Cast 16 stitches to start knitting the small purse.

The body of the small purse

We will need knit (k) and purl (p) stitches to knit the purse.

Place the needle with stitches in your left hand and the working (empty) needle in your right.

Row 1

The first row is the knit row.

Slip the 1st st to the working needle. To knit a stitch, follow the instructions – place the yarn on the back side of the needle, insert the needle into the stitch from the left side, grab the yarn behind the needle and pull it through the loop, and slip the stitch with the grabbed yarn into the working needle. You have cast your first knit stitch.

Continue the same pattern till the end of this row.

Row 2

This row is the purl (p) row.

Turn the project, place the needle with stitches in your left hand and the empty needle in your right hand.

Slip the first st into the working needle. Follow the instructions – place the yarn in front of the needle, insert the needle into the loop from the right side, wrap the yarn around the needle, push the yarn down with your finger, pull a yarn, and slip the loop into the working needle. You have completed the purl stitch.

Cast off (finishing the knitting)

Slip the first stitch and knit the next one; you will have two stitches on the working needle. Pull the left needle and slide over the first loop (one on the right) over the second loop.

You will have one stitch left on the working needle, knit the next stitch, and pull over the first stitch over the second stitch. Continue these instructions until you reach the end of the Row and have one stitch left on the working needle.

Cut the extra yarn and leave approximately 15 inches that you will use to sew the edges of the purse.

Sewing the edges

Use the needle and extra yarn and sew along the project’s edges by inserting the yarn in and out of the edge loops. When you reach the end of the edge, wrap the yarn to make a knot and insert the yarn in and out of different stitches to secure it.

Take the new yarn and sew the second edge of the project. Secure and weave extra yarns.

Knitting a strap

We will knit a cord to attach it to the purse.

Cast on 3 stitches. Once you have stitches cast on the needle, instead of turning the project and starting knitting on the other side, take the second needle, place it in your left hand, and slip the stitches from the right-hand needle without knitting them. You will have a needle with stitches in your left; knit the stitches with your right-hand needle.

Once you knit the stitches, do not turn the project; slip it back to the left needle and knit it with the right-hand needle; continue this instruction until you reach the desired length. We knitted approximately 35 inches.

Cut the yarn and leave 10 inches to sew it to the purse.

Place the strap’s beginning and end in corresponding places and attach them using a needle and yarn. Secure extra yarn.

Attaching a button (optional)

You will need a sewing needle and thread to attach a button. Use the needle and thread, sew the button, ensure it is secured, weave the yarn, and cut the extra yarn.

Take knitting yarn approximately 7 inches and insert the end and beginning of the yarn into the stitches. Make two knots; you may use this yarn to wrap around the button.
